One Room Challenge Week 4: Teddy's Big Girl Room
Week 4! Already?? That went by FAST! This was definitely the week I started to feel the crunch of this design challenge, especially when I came up with some fabulous bedding ideas and realized pretty much anything custom would have required me to get moving Week1. Fail. I do want to give a special shout out though to Linda at Calling It Home who organizes this crazy ORC twice a year. It has been such an amazing experience and whether the room is 100% perfect or not on reveal day, I'll be so grateful I participated.
This week was all about textiles: bedding and window treatments. If you've been following me on Insta, you saw that I finally completed a Pelmet with the amazing bunny fabric (Hutch for Groundworks by Hunt Slonem) and got it hung! I was completed terrified stapling into a fairly pricey piece of fabric making something I've never made before, but lucky me it turned out great. The hanging part definitely took a little trial and error, but I finally got a good system and hopefully the next two go a little quicker!
As you can see in the pic, I also started daydreaming up headboard shapes with some painters tape on the wall. Because this is a queen turn sideways for a faux daybed, I can't just run out to the store and buy a headboard (even a king would fall a few inches short). I also am far too late in the game to have my local upholsterer make me something in less than two weeks. Yes, I begged. This leaves me with two options: 1. Have beautiful custom headboard made anyways but miss the reveal shoot 2. attempt to do it myself. Being stubborn and probably overestimating both my skill set and available time, I'm going with Option 2. I figure if all else fails, I can revert back to Option 1 and hopefully salvage some of my materials for the cause. I have taken a basic upholstery class so I'm hoping this makes me a little less than 100% crazy.
As for bedding, in a complete stroke of luck I came across the most darling pom throw pillows and the absolute perfect shade of pink sheets at mom headquarters (Target).
Next, determined to have three big 26" square pillows across the back of the bed, I trekked back to Nell Hills on Tuesday to pick out fabric for custom covers. After too many hours of looking at swatches and not enough food in this pregnant belly, I found nothing that felt perfect, and left feeling fairly defeated.
But luck was on my side again, as after a quick lunch, a brownie, and a pep talk, I popped into HomeGoods, and there was the most perfect 26" tassle pillow with down insert just waiting for me. While they only had one in store, TJMaxx online carried it (AMAZING!) and they are currently in route to my house.
I've not been quite as lucky (yet!) with bedspreads, mainly due to the weird size and pattern restrictions due to the bed being sideways. But three options (thank you Target and Amazon!) are on their way and I'm hoping at least one is a winner.
In the play canopy world, I had found one at Target for a steal but after hanging it up, decided the scale was a little off, so a new, bigger one, from RH Baby should be arriving today. Fingers crossed this one works out!
Still on the to do list (besides attempt crazy headboard project, finish two more pelmets and a wall of woodwork):
1. Art! I've been eyeing a few local pieces, some from Minted, and even thinking about crafting something of my own (I need more time in my day!). We have a local art fair coming up next weekend that I might browse but that's really pushing it timeline-wise!
2. Some kind of bookshelf/toy holder device. We really don't need a dresser in here because there are magical things happening in the closet (suspense!) but I do think some kind of Teddy-accessible shelving might not be a bad idea. Hoping to score something fabulous and cheap on Craigslist or a garage sale this weekend.
And I think that's it! Seems like not tooooo much on paper but I'm definitely feeling the crunch. I've added two new clients this week and my amazing husband has been gone all week starting grad school (we're so proud!). Needless to say, this mama is tired and in need of a good long weekend and a chance to really knock some of these items off her list!
Hope y'all are enjoying the ride! Don't forget to check out all the other amazing rooms being done via the One Room Challenge over at Calling it Home!
